Jaisalmer Fort Duration: 2 Hours
Your first stop will be the most beautiful and important heritage site of the city, Jaisalmer Fort. Jaisalmer is known as the place where forts are still alive, and its credit goes to the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort. Built by the Rajput ruler, Raja Jaisal in 1156 AD, this fort has an impressive architecture which is the reason why it’s listed among the largest forts in the world. While visiting, you will feel the amazing mixture of yellow and golden sandstone which reflexes the Golden color during daytime. It has 99 turrets and displays Rajasthani architecture in the palace walls and designs. Also explore Jain Temples located inside the fort, which are famous for their Dilwara style architecture. Patwa Ki Haweli Duration: 30 minutes
Reach Patwa-Ki-Hawali around 11:00 am which is only 3-minutes away from Jaisalmer Fort. Accolades for being one among the largest and most elaborately erected places in the city, this cluster of five small havelis are famous for two reasons. First, it was the first haveli built in Jaisalmer whose constructed was started in 1805. It took 50 years to complete the constructed of the entire complex. Second, it was built by Guman Chand Patwa who was the richest man and renowned trader of that time. He ordered the constructed of separate stories dedicated to each of his sons. While this structure lost some of its early glory, but still it has some mirror work art left which is worth paying entry for. 30 minutes is enough to explore this yellow sandstone structure.
Gadisar Lake Duration: 1 hour
After visiting the haveli, your next stop will be Gadisar Lake - one of the most visited tourist places in Jaisalmer. Built by Maharawal Gadsi Singh in the 14th century, this lake was constructed to accomplish the water needs of his people. After observing its importance, it’s surrounded by different beautifully carved chattries, temples, and small shrines, transforming it into a pilgrimage center in Jaisalmer. It’s waterfowl basically in winters, so it’s the time to enjoy boating here. So, you think you can miss this amazing place? No, you should not. You will have a definite view of photography at this place. Leave this place around 12:30 pm to reach the next stop.
Bada Bagh Duration: 45 Minutes
After a 15-minutes drive, you’ll reach Bada Badh which is your next stop to explore. This garden complex features a series of royal cenotaphs of Maharajas of Jaisalmer, including Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II who was the founder of the princely state of India, Rajasthan. His cenotaph was built by his son Lunkaran in the 16th century, next to a beautiful lake. This garden locates about 6 km to the north end of the city. It’s designed in such a way that it offers beautiful sunset views where the sun seems it is drowning in the desert. This is a must-see place if you’re willing to know about the history of the desert city. After exploring this site, take a short break of 30-minutes for lunch.
The Thar Heritage Museum Duration: 30 minutes
After a quick lunch, the car will stop at the Thar Heritage Museum around 1:30 pm. This private museum consists of different artefacts on Jaisalmer including musical instruments, turbans artefacts, fossils and kitchen equipments that were used by royal chefs to display on Maharaja’s birth, their childhood, marriages, deaths and other opium customs. Explore this place with its founder, LN Khatri who is not only an historian, also a famous folklorist. Here, you’ll get a chance to learn about Hinduism spiritual journey which is well-explained by LN Khatri via snake and ladder game. Spend 30-minutes here, and move to the next stop.
Thar Desert for Camel Safari Duration: 1.5 Hours
Your next stop will be the Great Indian Desert - The Thar Desert. Famous for its silky Sam Sand Dunes, Jaisalmer’s most-popular excursion site locates 41 kms west of the Jaisalmer. Travel for 1.5 hour to experience the beautiful views of the calm desert and feel the hot wind flow. The band of dune stretched around 2 km offering most picturesque views in the region. Here you can have a free walk to enjoy carnival like atmosphere or ride a camel for solitary desert experience. It’s the best place that reflects real culture of Jaisalmer.
